Lot Description
THE E.D.J. SET, FROM THE EUEL DURWOOD JONES COLLECTION With a mintage of only 55,600 the 1911-D quarter eagle is the undisputed KEY to the Indian Head series. This date is always in constant demand from collectors, regardless of condition; from problematic, circulated pieces to GEM examples such as the one offered here. Only five examples have graded finer at NGC, there is no doubt of duplication in the Census data. At first glance, you might think it's a common date Gem-grade example because it is so nice. Save for a few minor traces of microscopic contact, the surfaces on BOTH sides are virtually immaculate. We cannot stress enough how clean (which is highly unusual) the dreaded right reverse is. The luster is generally bold and brilliant. This coin is totally original and has never been dipped, both sides are an even moderate gold with warm orange overtones; there are NO spots or discolorations anywhere. All of the details are sharply struck and are visible to the naked eye. The eye appeal is great! PCGS 28, NGC 78. The most recent NGC MS65 examples realized $45,600 and $46,800 in January and July 2022. The current NGC Price Guide value is $66,500 and the Collectors Universe value is $75,000. NGC has graded just a half a dozen finer of this important KEY issue, and this attractive GEM is worthy of a very strong bid. Cert. Number 2033257005 PCGS # 7943
