The Washington Quarter series has long been popular with coin collectors, who pursue these highly familiar coins by collecting them by date and mintmark. Some enthusiasts go one step further and approach the major varieties, including doubled dies. And when it comes to the Washington Quarters, there are several doubled dies worth noting. Among these is the 1943-S Doubled Die Obverse Washington Quarter, a variety that is noted in several coin price guides and United States coin catalogs, not to mention PCGS CoinFacts and PCGS Price Guide.

The main diagnostics for the 1943-S Doubled Die Obverse Washington Quarter are significant spread, or doubling, in the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” and legend “LIBERTY.” The notched serifs showcase unmistakable evidence of die doubling – classic pickup points for significant doubled dies of this magnitude. The 1943-S Doubled Die Obverse Washington Quarter is the kind of coin that would appear in more advanced sets, including an array of PCGS Registry Set categories for the Washington Quarter.

PCGS estimates some 3,500 examples of this doubled die exist, with approximately 2,000 in the Mint State grades; about 10% of the uncirculated specimens are believed to qualify for a grade of PCGS MS65 or better. Prices for the coin begin at less than $100 in well-worn grades but exceed $200 in XF40. Mint State pieces sell for north of $500, with those grading MS65 taking around $1,200. The record price for the 1943-S Doubled Die Obverse Washington Quarter was achieved by an MS67 example that traded for $18,800 in 2021.
