Lot Description
Perennially Popular 1787 Horned Eagle Massachusetts Cent Rare Mint State Grade from NGC 1787 Massachusetts Cent. Ryder 2b-A, W-6040. Rarity-2. Arrows in Left Talon, Horned Eagle. MS-61 BN (NGC). Warmly and evenly toned in glossy antique copper-brown, the surfaces are satiny in texture with a hard, tight appearance. Roughness around the reverse border from 3 o'clock to 8:30 is in the die. Both sides are sharply defined overall from a generally well centered strike that is just a tad tight to the lower borders, although not involving any of the design elements. There are no detracting marks, a tiny backward C-shaped strike through in the upper left obverse field between the second letter O and the top of the bow serving as a useful provenance marker. Superior quality and eye appeal for this iconic variety in the Massachusetts copper series. Provenance: From Heritage's sale of the Old New England Collection, April 2014 CSNS Signature Auction, lot 3692. PCGS# 688942. NGC ID: 2B26. Click here for certification details from NGC.
