- 1858 Flying Eagle Cent. Large Letters. Snow-PR1. Proof-64 (NGC). CAC. OH.
Fiery golden hues brighten the eagle's plumage while bursts of rose and pale sky-blue engage the peripheries. The devices are lightly textured and the fields exhibit a reflective, coppery-gold sheen. A boldly impressed specimen of a significantly rare prize, an issue that saw a distribution of just 50 to 100 pieces, with many of those probably included in the 12-piece copper-nickel sets of the year available at the Mint. Much rarer than its Small Letters counterpart; the Bowers reference notes: "While Proof 1858 Small Letters cents were included among the restrike sets of 1858-dated patterns made in 1859-61, most probably the Proof 1858 Large Letters were only distributed in 1858." A classic issue that is far rarer than a proof 1856 Flying Eagle Cent. The present coin presents a very notable opportunity for a connoisseur.
