Lot Description

Last of the Indian eagle issues prior to 1920, and the only one of the year, the 1916-S was produced to the extent of just 138,500 pieces. This is a limited total by the standards of the type, and with many examples melted in 1937 after limited use in domestic commerce in the West, the 1916-S is scarce even in circulated grades (most grade AU). At the Choice About Uncirculated level the present example offers solid originality and uncommonly strong eye appeal. Rich reddish-honey surfaces are boldly defined and lustrous for the grade with a pleasingly smooth appearance overall. Thoroughly PQ for the assigned grade, as confirmed by coveted CAC approval.
