Lot Description
1864 Three-Dollar Gold Piece. AU-58 (PCGS). Charming pale honey surfaces also reveal tinges of pale rose iridescence as the coin rotates under a light. Lustrous and boldly defined throughout, this is an exceptionally well preserved example of the elusive and conditionally challenging 1864 three-dollar gold piece. From a circulation strike mintage of just 2,630 pieces, survivors of which are thought to number only 200 to 250 coins in all grades. With Mint State pieces seldom offered (the present sale notwithstanding), this handsome Choice AU -- scarce in its own right -- represents the finest in both quality and eye appeal obtainable for most collectors. Provenance: From the RSC Collection. Earlier from Charles N. Peters' P.N.N.A. World's Fair Sale of May-June 1962, lot 494. Lot tag included. PCGS# 7985. NGC ID: 25MK.
