Lot Description
1785 Nova Constellatio Copper. Crosby 1-B, W-1880. Rarity-4. CONSTELATIO, Blunt Rays. AU-50 (PCGS). 124.1 grains. Handsome ruddy-brown patina blankets both sides with golden-brown highlights in the protected areas around many of the design elements. Most features are boldly to sharply defined from a generally well centered strike, although the word NOVA and the date are a bit tight to the lower borders and a tad soft. A short scrape in the right obverse field and a couple of minor marks at the letter U in JUSTICIA are the only blemishes worthy of individual mention, and they are easily overlooked in hand. The often-seen reverse die break within the bottom of the wreath is well advanced here, and there is also considerable evidence of die rust within the rays on the obverse. Crosby 1-B is the only die marriage of the 1785-dated Nova Constellatio copper issue that corresponds to the Blunt Rays Guide Bookvariety, and it shares its obverse with the 1783-dated Crosby 3-C die pairing. Choice for the assigned grade, and ideal for inclusion in either a type set or specialized variety collection. Provenance: From our (Bowers and Merena's) Baltimore Auction of June 2007, lot 56. Collector envelope with attribution and provenance notes included. This coin was previously certified AU-58 BN by NGC; insert #2018904-002 is also included. PCGS# 810.
