Lot Description
Tompkins Die Stage 1/5, Rea et al. Die State c. Tompkins Plate Coin. Lustrous, frosty surfaces also readily reveal semi-reflective tendencies in the absence of all but light toning. We note only blushes of iridescent reddish-russet and tannish-rose peripheral colors around essentially brilliant centers. The strike is nicely centered, the peripheral features boldly defined, and the centers with isolated softness as so often seen in quarters of this type. There are no sizeable marks on either side.
The 1807 Browning-7 is typically found in lower circulated grades, and the offered specimen is tied or CC#1 in the 2008 Tompkins census, tied for CC#2 in the 2010 Rea et al. census. This variety is unknown in Mint State. A significant highlight of the Tompkins Reference Collection, this offering deserves the undivided attention of early quarter specialists.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: I battled hard with several other collectors for this coin when purchased at the Reiver sale in 2006. There is virtually no option for upgrading this coin as the other two coins (an AU-58+ and a second AU-58) are all that exist for the 1806 B-7 in high grade. A prize for collectors.
