Lot Description
1862 Silver Three-Cent Piece. MS-67+ (NGC). A gorgeous example with mottled cobalt blue, reddish-rose and pinkish-apricot iridescence adorning both sides. Satiny surfaces are expectably smooth for the assigned grade with a bold to sharp strike throughout. The metallic composition and design of the Type III trime are identical to those on its Type II predecessor except for the removal of one of the extra outlines to the obverse star. Walter Breen (1988) speculates that this minor design change was made to extend working die life and otherwise ease the Mint's burden in producing these coins. The 1862 is one of the most popular type candidates of this new design, and the last issue for the denomination with a six-figure circulation strike mintage. The present Superb Gem would serve well in a high quality set. NGC Census: 5; 2 finer in this category (MS-68 * finest). PCGS# 3680. NGC ID: 22ZB. Click here for certification details from NGC.
