Lot Description

Of the 17,450,000 cents struck for circulation in 1857, the vast majority (Rick Snow, 2014, estimates 16,450,000) were coined from dies of the Type of 1857 obverse hub. This hub style is best identified by looking at the letter O in OF, which has a rounded center as opposed to a square center seen on the Type of 1856 hub. This issue as a whole is scarce in Gem Mint State, of course, and there are certainly not enough premium MS-65s such as this to meet demand from discerning type collectors and copper-nickel cent enthusiasts.
