Lot Description

1760 Voce Populi Halfpenny. Nelson-3, W-13820. Rarity-3. Early Die State. AU-53+ (PCGS). 113.6 grains. Handsome copper-brown patina with a tinge of pale crimson intermingled throughout both sides. The strike is exceptional for the type with good centering and all devices boldly to sharply defined apart from a touch of softness in the centers. Satiny, hard and predominantly smooth, trivial obverse flan flaws over and around the portrait are easily overlooked and just as easily forgiven. This is an early die state of the popular VOOE POPULI Guide Bookvariety, the letter C in VOCE not yet closed by a die crack.
