Lot Description

Nelson-7 is one of the more underrated Voce Populi halfpenny varieties, missing from the famed Norweb Collection, and especially difficult to locate in higher grades. The Nelson Plate-McGrath specimen is about as nice as these come, although the Carolina Colonial Coin Collection example sold in our November 2016 Baltimore Auction was only a bit less sharp, if somewhat rougher; it was certified EF-45 by PCGS at that time. Ford's was smoother, yet less well defined; we graded it Very Fine in our (Stack's) October 2004 Ford V sale. The specimen offered here represents solid and desirable Choice VF quality for the variety with attractive toning in blended olive-copper and medium brown patina. Borders tight to the peripheral features at right obverse, wear largely confined to the centers, but in all areas we note good outline detail to the major design elements. A few widely scattered planchet pits are easily forgiven, the surfaces otherwise smooth with no troublesome marks.
