Pumpkin-spice lovers unite – autumn is in the air! Several major holidays light up the calendar in September, October, and November, including Oktoberfest, Indigenous Peoples’ Day, Halloween, and Thanksgiving. We also can’t forget the many harvest fests held around the country, not to mention the hayrides, apple-picking events, and pie bakeoffs.
However, if you love the colorful fireworks that Mother Nature sets off each autumn, then you may be planning for some local and regional – maybe even cross-country – road trips to enjoy some leaf peeping. And of all the long and winding roads that traverse the most colorful hills, valleys, and vistas in the United States, none may be quite as famous or picturesque as the Blue Ridge Parkway.
The Blue Ridge Parkway is a 469-mile-long scenic roadway that traces the peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina and Virginia. Serving as the longest linear park in the United States, the Blue Ridge Parkway was first constructed in 1935 and features myriad overlooks and landmarks. Among the highlights is Linn Cove Viaduct, which bends around Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina and was considered a marvel of engineering when it opened in 1987 to fill the last gap of the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Whether you live just a stone’s throw from the Blue Ridge Parkway or hundreds of miles away, you can cruise the famous mountain highway right from the very comfort of your coin collection! Huh? That’s right – the Blue Ridge Parkway is the central theme of a 2015 America the Beautiful Quarter!
Honored as one of the National Parks and Landmarks on the 28th coin of the popular circulating quarter program, the Blue Ridge Parkway Quarter transports collectors to a rustic tunnel found in North Carolina, a state that lays claim to 25 of the 26 tunnels along the famous byway. The 2015 Blue Ridge Parkway Quarter can still be found in circulation, though high-end specimens make great additions to any PCGS Registry Set, which offers numerous categories that cater to collectors of the America The Beautiful Quarter series.
