One of the hottest series among modern coins in 2025 is the Mexico Silver Onza Libertad. At the American Numismatic Association (ANA) World’s Fair of Money from August 18-23, 2025, I asked a dealer on the show floor on August 19 what he was asking for his 1 ounce Brilliant Uncirculated 2025 Silver Onza Libertad (he had two and I was a little jealous), he replied “$7,500” with the utmost calmness. It didn‘t surprise me that the first one offered on eBay sold for $5,500 in a no-reserve style auction on August 12, 2025. I guess the prices went up. On August 21 when I went to view the coins, they had been pulled from the showcase.

Rewind to the Summer Florida United Numismatists (Florida United Numismatists) Show from July 9-11, 2025, which I attended. I was chatting with Eric Hess of World Numismatics LLC, which offers hundreds of Onza Libertads for sale at their website. We were talking about how the red-hot silver Mexican Onza Libertad market has gone parabolic in the last few months. I mentioned to him, “Yeah, Eric, I’ve been noticing a sharp rise in some key issues and the market overall.”

I asked Eric about the 2025 Onza Libertad that still hadn’t been released. He said, “You know we are paying up very well for the five-coin Brilliant Uncirculated set.” I looked at him, baffled. “Whaaaaaaat?” I replied. Hess notes, “Supposedly only 300 sets were made, and they aren’t making anymore. A couple of dealers have their tiny allotment of sets – and good luck getting one.” My reaction was in disbelief, then I thought to myself, “Is this 2025 Onza Libertad silver coin going to command possibly upwards of $10,000 or more in MS70?” This seems to be a possibility, as an ungraded 2025 1 ounce Onza Libertad example sold for $5,500 on eBay and appeared in not-so-stellar shape. Onza Libertad silver coins are normally distributed in 25-coin roll tubes. No rolls are being distributed in 2025, and several dealers reported that the one ounce coins have been arriving in groups that are loose in a plastic baggie.

“Cling-clang-bing-bang” comes to mind. Say it ain’t so, Joe…

I called Hess during the second week of August 2025 to ask if he has seen the recent prices on eBay for 2025 Onza Libertads. Eric answered, “hang on for a second,” and shortly thereafter continued, “you don’t mind being on speaker do you? I replied, “I’m ok with that.” Kent Ponterio (head of World Numismatics LLC) says hi and notes, “You know lately, all we do is talk about Onza Libertads. I’m going to send you some information. Hold on.” He texts me the official releases from the Banco de Mexico, which are written in Spanish. Ponterio asks, “Did you get my texts?” “Yes I did, and thanks,” I replied.

Ponterio went on, “look at what the listed mintages are for the Brilliant Uncirculated versions.” I scroll through the text to find them and read the following: Three types of finishes were issued by the Banco de Mexico for the 2025 Onza Libertad series: satin (Brilliant Uncirculated), reverse proof, and proof. In the official correspondence from the Banco de Mexico, the mintages for “Uncirculated Bullion Libertad Onza” are not noted as “final.” If these mintages remain the same as noted above for the Brilliant Uncirculated issues, then many collectors may not be able to buy a complete mint set at retail prices from the past. The asking price may become whatever a seller asks. The most popular coin within this series is the 1 ounce Brilliant Uncirculated Libertad, which will be out of reach for many collectors due to price.

The mintages for the Brilliant Uncirculated coins are listed as:

  • 5 ounce (200 mintage)
  • 2 ounce (200 mintage)
  • 1 ounce (300 mintage)
  • 1/2 ounce (100 mintage)
  • 1/4 ounce (100 mintage)
  • 1/10th ounce (200 mintage)
  • 1/20th ounce (200 mintage)

As of this writing, these mintages are not listed as “final” from the Banco de Mexico. Let me note the mintages for the Reverse Proof Libertad marked “final”:

  • 1 ounce (1,900 final mintage)
  • 2 ounce (300 final mintage)
  • 5 ounce (600 final mintage)

The standard proof issues for the larger denominations, 2 ounce (200 final mintage), and the 5 ounce (300 final mintage); the standard five-coin proof set issued in a wooden box has a mintage of 150 sets. However, the individual mintages for the 1 ounce, 1/2 ounce, 1/4 ounce, 1/10th ounce, and 1/20th ounce are not listed from the Banco de Mexico. Ponterio mentions that, “Nowhere does it state in the correspondence that the mintage for the five-coin set is final. However the reverse proof issues and the 2 ounce and 5 ounce are listed as final mintages.”

The first five coin proof set listed on eBay with no reserve was sold on August 12, 2025, for a whopping $13,200! A few days later on August 21, 2025, a set was sold for $8,225 and two later on August 23, a set sold for $8,100. FOMO (fear of missing out) comes to mind with these prices, and one dealer (who shall remain nameless) quoted me $15,000 for the same 2025 Onza Libertad Proof set at the ANA show in Oklahoma City. As a side note, a 1 ounce proof coin was sold with no reverse and ended at $4,005 on August 12, 2025.

The Banco de Mexico is supposedly sitting on a large number of unsold 2024 Onza Libertad silver coins and possibly gold as well. Hence the authorization from Congress in Mexico for the limited 2025 release. No gold coins were released in 2025 and none are planned to be minted this year. From the information above, one can conclude that the mintages for the Reverse Proof (1 ounce, 2 ounce, and 5 ounce) coins, the 2 ounce proof, and the 5 ounce proof coins are final. The individual proof coins in the 5-coin set are not available online as of yet. In addition, the mintages for the Brilliant Uncirculated versions are not final.

For now, eBay is the only source for updated pricing information for the 2025 Onza Libertad releases. Maybe in due time, the mintages for the Brilliant Uncirculated and proof versions will be available at Banco de Mexico website for all to see. For now, the transparency seems to be unclear as to what has been produced for some issues, and some issues we have final mintages. Ponterio and Hess were kind enough to share what information they knew about the 2025 Onza Libertad release with PCGS. However, mintages can vary; please compare these mintage figures noted with any official releases from the Banco de Mexico you may find. If the Banco de Mexico authorizes the striking of more Onza Libertad coins dated 2025, the prices of those issues will plummet. However, if additional coins are not minted, the prices may remain elevated or possibly higher than they are today. Only time will tell. Good luck finding a 2025 Onza Libertad, folks!
