Losbeschreibung
1856 Round 25 Cents. BG-228. Rarity-7. Liberty Head. MS-62 (NGC). Simply put, this is a very rare type. The 2003 edition of the book California Pioneer Fractional Gold by Walter Breen and Ronald J. Gillio pedigrees only 11 specimens with the significant comment, ""Probably includes duplication."" The coin we are offering here is not included on the authors' census list, being a new discovery that is making its debut in the U.S. numismatic market. Even with the addition of this piece, however, the total number of BG-228 examples known is probably limited to only 9-11 pieces.
An attractively original BU, both sides exhibit handsome olive-orange patina. Well struck throughout, with no significant abrasions apart from a wispy obverse graze over and before Liberty's neck that should serve as a useful pedigree marker. Sure to generate serious interest among collectors of California Fractional gold.
