1857-D Liberty Quarter Eagle. AU-58 (NGC). The 1857-D is a low mintage date of just 2,364 pieces. Those that did survive tend to be in high grade, but rarely this nice. The fields are smooth and show minimal handling marks, and the strike is sharp on Liberty's curls and the surrounding stars. On the reverse the eagle's feathers are crisply defined. Close study finds a pair of minor nicks hidden in the dentils of the reverse, one below the denomination, the other below the right wing. Conditionally challenging for the specialist, and rarely encountered this nice.
