Lot Description: Exquisite surfaces combine original mint color with desirable toning. Largely glossy brown with flashes of vivid gold, pink and apricot. Fully struck to a high Proof standard and expertly preserved, fully justifying the Gem grade assigned by PCGS. This issue is key to completion of a specialized two-cent collection, as the 1873 is a Proof-only coin that comes in two variants. The Close 3, offered here, is believed to be the original issue of the year, with a mintage estimated at 600 pieces in the <em>Guide Book</em>. This is one of the nicest extant in the certified Red and Brown category, and will please even the most discerning numismatist.
