- Lot Description
- Tompkins Die Stage 2/3. This lightly circulated survivor is boldly defined in all areas save for at the upper obverse and lower reverse peripheries, the former with a few light adjustment marks that partially obscure the letter E in LIBERTY. Light to moderate golden-grade patina overall with glints of softly frosted luster flashing into view as the surfaces rotate under a light. This is the first issue on which the Heraldic Eagle reverse appeared on the half dollar, and it is a scarce date for the type with a mere 30,289 pieces coined from two die pairings. Overton-101, offered here, is readily attributable by the presence of several prominent die rust lumps within the lower left reverse field, around the arrows.
