- Tompkins Die Stage 1/3, Rea et al. Die State b. Breen-Browning and Tompkins Plate Coin. A remarkable second offering for this rare Browning number from the Tompkins Collection. This is a bright silver gray piece with some glossiness to the texture but only a few wispy, well scattered marks from circulation that are commensurate with the assigned grade. Denticulation is universally bold and even around both sides, and while star 4 in the upper reverse field is typically soft for the variety, the balance of the design elements are boldly outlined and fully appreciable. There is even some sharper definition remaining in the deepest recesses of Liberty's portrait and the eagle's plumage. Respectable circulated condition for the 1805 Browning-5 quarter that will warrant attention from many specialists in this series.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: I purchased this coin for many reasons, including the knowledge that a higher grade example would be difficult to come by, that it is the discovery coin for the die marriage, and that it is the plate coin in the Browning update by Breen in 1992. I chose to use it as the plate coin in my book, as well. One of several of Jules Reiver's coins that I was delighted to add to my collection when they sold in 2006.
