Description du lot
A lovely coin, indeed memorable for its grade in combination with superb eye appeal. This 1875-CC will attract wide attention as it crosses the auction block. Both obverse and reverse are deeply lustrous with a frosty finish and vivid golden-apricot color. Some contact marks are seen on the obverse, as expected, but the reverse, due to the complexity of the design, is relatively free from such. A minor planchet streak and associated copper spots within and behind the hair curls along the back of Liberty's neck are as made and not overly distracting in most viewing situations. If you are assembling a high grade double eagle collection, this will nicely answer the requirement for this popular date and mint. Lovely, lustrous, and in Select Mint State, one of the finest certified for the issue in today's market, this will be a beacon to attract the connoisseur and advanced specialist.<p>In 1875, double eagle production at the Nevada branch mint was stepped up significantly with a sufficiently large mintage of 111,151 pieces, helped by the $1.5 million bullion deposit made by the Consolidated Virginia Mining Company in June of that year. These coins entered circulation in the region and served many years of service. Later on, many examples were shipped abroad, but by this time were quite worn. As one of the most available of the Carson City double eagle issues, the 1875-CC is a particularly popular issue for collectors desiring an example from the legendary Nevada mint. However, this issue is incredibly challenging at the finer Mint State levels, as most Uncirculated survivors exhibit copious marks or other surface problems. The present piece is a notable exception to this rule at the MS-63 grade level and would be very difficult to improve upon.
