Description du lot
A thoroughly appealing example of this challenging Guide Book variety of the Vermont copper. The planchet is somewhat irregular, out of round with no border denticulation at upper left obverse, lower reverse with thin lip of virgin planchet beyond the denticles at 5 o'clock. As well, we note granularity in the planchet at left obverse and reverse which obscures the design elements in those areas, although all are discernible with patience. Other areas offer bold to sharp strike detail, the surfaces richly original with dominant chestnut-brown patina and tinges of olive nestled in among many of the design elements. A few light scratches within the areas of planchet porosity on both sides are the only post-production blemishes of note and suggest a misguided attempt to find out what was "wrong" with this coin's surfaces. Double struck, evidence for which is most pronounced at lower right obverse and lower left reverse.
