Description du lot
The 1861 silver three-cent piece may seem like a relatively common coin in Proof due to a reported mintage of 1,000 pieces struck in that format. It is actually much scarcer than many collectors realize, however, because several hundred examples failed to sell to contemporary collectors and were disposed of by the Mint either through melting or release into circulation. Writing in the new (2025) volume in his United States Proof Coins reference series, John W. Dannreuther accounts for only 200 to 300 survivors. That offered here is a delightful Gem with rich olive-gray patina backlit by iridescent reddish-russet, antique gold and powder blue. Fully struck with a lively mint finish.
