Lot Description
Ex Price, as noted on the insert. Struck during the Panic of 1893, a severe depression that caused much economic turmoil, the need for coinage dropped. The mintage of 740,000 was somewhat generous when compared to the 1893-S Morgan dollar production. Like the Morgan dollar of the same date, the 93-S half's mintage went into circulation and remained there. Few collectors cared about mintmarks at the time, and this is a major condition rarity in GEM, and excessively rare any finer than the currently offered MS65. The devices are razor sharp in definition from an exacting blow from the dies. A faint silvery-white pearlescent hue kisses the highly lustrous surfaces, showing some hints of reflection in the fields. There are some tiny lines that can be detected with a strong glass. The eye appeal is quite pleasing overall. Ex Dr. Thaine B. Price Collection, David Akers, May 1998, lot 129; John C. Hugon Collection, Heritage, January 2005, lot 4204; the Saranne Collection, Heritage, August 2022, lot 4532. PCGS 6, NGC 3. In its most recent appearance, this GEM brought $8,700 and prior to that, back in 2005 this coin sold for $17,365. The current PCGS Price Guide value of $13,500 is about the mid-way point between this coin's two APRs. A prize for the Barber collector, this GEM was once part of two of the greatest Barber half dollar collections ever assembled, now it can be yours! Cert. Number 50138080 PCGS # 6467
