1839-D Liberty Half Eagle. VF-30 (NGC). This is the first year of issue of the Liberty half eagle, and the only year with the obverse mintmark placed above the date, mintmarks were moved to the reverse in 1840. Smooth wear and clean surfaces with a few minor nicks and scuffs. Mintage of 18,939 pieces, few of which came down to us today. Bisecting crack on the reverse from the U of UNITED to the rim between the letters OF likely, another die crack at the left wing tip. PCGS# 8193.
