Lot Description
1854 Silver Three-Cent Piece. Proof-63 (PCGS). Extremely rare as a Proof, this is the first year that Proof Three Cent Silver coins were struck in any numbers, with a single example certified prior to this date (an 1851, marking the initial production year). For the year 1854 there are between 25 and 30 pieces known in Proof, the present coin about in the middle in terms of quality of those that survive. Toned with attractive greenish-gold iridescence that covers the entire surface, the coin is both elegant and attractive. Reflective mirroring in the fields, while all devices are crisp and complete. No signs of die clashing and this Proof stands on its own credentials. An historic and desirable coin for the specialist.
