Lot Description
A generally silver gray example with outlines of golden-russet patina to the design elements. Lustrous for the grade with a frosty texture, light wear has also left bold to sharp striking detail throughout. From a mintage of 379,100 circulation strikes coined at the Philadelphia Mint late in the Civil War. The economic realities of the time precluded these coins entering circulation in the East and Midwest until the late 1870s. By then, however, most had already succumbed to melting, generally after export to Canada or Latin America in earlier years.
