1846-C Liberty Quarter Eagle. AU-55 (NGC). Bright straw-gold and rather attractive, with frosty mint luster dominating the surfaces while a touch of prooflike flash hugs the borders of the devices and legends on the reverse. Strike is about average for this low mintage issue, which at 4,808 pieces is one of the lowest in the entire Charlotte Quarter Eagle series. Diagnostic die spalling is best seen around the date on this first issue since 1844 after a fire disabled the Charlotte mint in 1845.
