- A perusal of our online archives will show that the majority of our offerings for this issue in recent years have been for EF examples. This is not surprising since, of the 300 to 400 survivors that Doug Winter (2008) accounts for, fewer than 75 are in About Uncirculated grades. This scarce and desirable PCGS AU-53 retains appreciable frosty luster and universally bold to sharp detail. A touch of glossiness to the texture and light hairlines are noted for accuracy, but there are no sizeable marks, and the color is an attractive blend of light honey and golden-orange shades. High grade (read: AU and Mint State) examples of the 1847-C half eagle are rarer than those of the 1849-C, 1850-C, 1852-C, 1853-C, 1857-C and 1858-C. Expect strong competition for this well produced and nicely composed About Uncirculated offering.
