- 1878-CC Liberty Eagle. Winter 1-A, the only known dies. EF-45 (NGC). A leading rarity in the CC-mint Eagle series, Doug Winter and Jim Halperin (<em>Gold Coins of the Carson City Mint</em>, 2001) rank the 1878-CC third among the 19 issues in this mintmarked gold series in terms of total number of coins believed extant. One of just 3,244 pieces produced, the example we offer here is a very scarce EF with only light wear to generally bold-looking devices. A few reeding marks in the left-obverse field are worthy of mention, but we see no other sizeable or otherwise individually distracting abrasions. Handsome deep-rose patina throughout.
