- Minimally toned around the peripheries and largely platinum-white, allowing the spectacular surface quality to take center stage. The devices are cloaked in rich, frosty luster, starkly contrasting with the deeply reflective fields. Fully struck and essentially untouched.<p>Along with the Proof issues of 1896 and 1897, the 1898 is the most consistently well produced and attractive in the series. Even so, few survivors from a mintage of 735 Proofs are as exquisite as this gorgeous specimen. Perhaps only 15 to 20% of these display Deep Cameo contrast, and even those are typically in grades of Proof-67 and lower. At PCGS Proof-68+ DCAM, the present piece is among the very finest certified for both the date and the entire Barber quarter series. It represents an important opportunity for both type collectors and specialists in Barber silver coinage.
