Lot Description

Famous as a key to the series in circulation strike format, 1886 loses considerable cachet as a proof, yet the present gem example exhibits characteristics that might let it slip into a circulation strike collection undetected. The rims are not squared off at all, and in fact are heavily beveled on the obverse, and neither side displays any cameo contrast at all. It's quite possible that this slab contains explosive possibilities if the coin could be recertified at the gem level as being not a proof.
