- 1873 Gold Dollar. Close 3. MS-61 (PCGS).
Deep yellow gold with bold orange toning highlights. The fields are satiny and the devices are lightly dusted, with a modest cameo contrast the end result. The variety with a raised vertical line on Liberty's neck -- for years this variety was openly regarded as a contemporary counterfeit. One of just 1,500 examples of the date struck in the Close 3 style -- an additional 123,300 examples were struck later in the year of the Open 3 style. Choice for the grade.
