Description du lot: Superior quality and outstanding eye appeal for an issue that is rarely offered at any level of preservation. A premium quality Choice Cameo Proof, this lovely specimen is untoned apart from crescents of vivid cobalt blue and reddish-orange iridescence lining the upper obverse and lower reverse borders. Sharply struck throughout the design, the in-hand appearance is of a fully defined coin. There are no blemishes of note, confirming this as one of the very finest Proofs of the date obtainable to today's collectors.<p>While Q. David Bowers (2016) provides a mintage of approximately 20 to 30 coins for this issue, John W. Dannreuther takes a more conservative view with an estimated mintage of 20 pieces. The latter author, in the 2025 volume in his <em>United States Proof Coins</em> reference series, also provides an estimate of just 12 to 14 coins extant, which confirms the Proof 1855 quarter as similar in rarity to its half dime, dime and half dollar counterparts. We have offered precious few of these over the years, and even fewer that we can recall from recent memory that rival the present specimen in terms of eye appeal. Worthy of the strongest bids.
