- 1841-D Liberty Quarter Eagle. Winter 2-D. AU-55 (PCGS). A very rare die marriage, Doug Winter (<em>Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint: 1838-1861</em>, 2003 edition) knows of only two examples of the 1841-D Winter 2-D Quarter Eagle. This is one of the coins known to the author, and it is a richly patinated, reddish-khaki piece. The obverse is the (slightly) better struck of the two sides, although at least some of the softness to the central devices is due to light highpoint wear. Bright and semi prooflike in sheen, a shallow obverse strikethrough (as made) that connects stars 12-13 should serve as a useful pedigree marker.
