Lot Description

Tompkins Die Stage 5(?)/3, Rea et al. Die Stage b, Rarity-7+. A very rare die state, the reverse crack that originates at the letter D extends backward through the remaining letters in UNITED, but has not yet reached the border outside the U to form a retained cud. The Tompkins obverse die progression for this Browning number appears to be flawed. While the present example exhibits the crack from the border to star 11 of Die Stage 5, none of the breaks from the earlier stages are present, most notably the "lumps" between stars 3 and 4.
