1896-S Barber Half Dollar. MS-64 (PCGS). Dusted with pale silver and gold iridescence, this is a fully struck and satiny near-Gem with pleasingly smooth surfaces throughout. The 1896-S is truly elusive in Mint State. Uncirculated survivors can be accounted for in terms of dozens rather than hundreds. Evidently few examples of this issue were set aside by contemporary numismatists, and as a consequence, quality examples always command high premiums. PCGS Population: 24; 22 finer (MS-67 finest).
