- Offered is the single finest PCGS-certified Proof 1883 quarter eagle in any category, a coin whose only challenger for CC#1 ranking is the lone entry in Proof-67 * Cameo on the current NGC Census. Bursting with vivid golden-rose color, this luxurious specimen is expectably smooth at the Superb Gem grade level. Boldly cameoed in finish, as well, the mirrored fields form a splendid backdrop to razor sharp, softly frosted devices. The surfaces retain their virtually pristine appearance even under close scrutiny with a loupe.
The Proof quarter eagle mintage for 1883 came in at 82 pieces. Today, the experts at PCGS CoinFacts believe there are 40 to 50 distinct examples extant, although John W. Dannreuther (2018) takes a more conservative stance with an estimate of just 30 to 35 known. A rare issue, in either case, and this is the finest obtainable. An exquisite offering for the advanced connoisseur who demands rich eye appeal, rarity, and unsurpassable quality.
