Losbeschreibung: 1840-C Liberty Head Half Eagle. Winter-1. Die State I. AU-58 (PCGS). Deep yellow-gold with abundant luster remaining in the recesses of the design. Reasonably sharp for this early Charlotte issue, with minor localized softness on Liberty's curls and a few stars, as well as the eagle. Evidence of die rust at the rims as well. Early die state with no evidence of the die crack that forms through I(CA) to the arrows on later states. Pleasing surface quality and scarce this nice. It should be noted that only nine examples have thus far been graded Mint State by PCGS, MS-64 is the finest. Provenance: From the Augustana Collection. PCGS# 8196. NGC ID: 25SD.
