Lot Description

1866-S Liberty Head Eagle. No Motto. VF-20 (NGC). Appealing honey-gold surfaces with warmer outlines to many of the devices. Detail is suitably bold for the assigned grade, and there are no sizeable or otherwise individually mentionable abrasions. The final No Motto Liberty Head eagle and the only one bearing this date, the 1866-S has a paltry original mintage of 8,500 pieces. With the vast majority of coins lost to commercial use, no more than 55 or 60 examples are believed extant in all grades. The present example is worthy of a solid bid, and seemingly earmarked for inclusion in an advanced collection of Liberty Head eagles or San Francisco Mint gold coinage. PCGS# 8644. NGC ID: 264H.
