Losbeschreibung: 1847/47 Braided Hair Cent. N-31. Rarity-5. Large/Small 7. MS-65 BN (NGC). Deep chocolate-brown with a very even, unspotted appearance over both sides. Abundant underlying luster is present, and there are no mentionable marks or other surface distractions. Recutting on 47 is strong and easily seen on the tops of the digits. A popular recut date and a fairly scarce variety. Bob Grellman reports seeing only two Mint State examples of this elusive die pairing in the 2021 edition of his reference The Die Varieties of United States Large Cents: 1840-1857. Since both of those coins "have generous traces of mint red remaining visible," the present example is a newcomer to the Condition Census for the 1847 Newcomb-31 dies. Grellman Die State d.
