The San Francisco Mint's last trade dollar issue, the 1878-S was delivered in part after coinage of the denomination had been officially halted by the Treasury Department on February 22, 1878. The San Francisco Mint, however, needed until April to deliver the final 1,695,819 trade dollars due its bullion depositors, for a total mintage of 4,162,000 pieces for the 1878-S. This issue has long been a mainstay of Mint State type sets, and this bright and brilliant example is sure to please.
