Description du lot
One of only 9,000 silver dollars struck in San Francisco in 1872. The Bowers reference notes: "<em>The 1872-S is rarer than the mintage indicates, a situation that can be laid at the doorstep of melting and exportation...examples of the 1872-S are elusive in all grades and are very rare in Mint State.</em>" The surfaces present a soft steel-gray appearance with some darker incrustation in selected crevices on the reverse. Notice the high placement of the tiny "S" mintmark on the reverse.
