- 1865 Seated Liberty Quarter. Proof-66 (NGC). Extraordinary technical quality in a No Motto Seated quarter, this delectable proof is silky smooth in sheen with none but a few extremely minor handling marks. Beautifully toned, as well, we note bold cobalt-blue peripheral highlights framing softer reddish-apricot centers. This is the final regular issue date of the type, 1866 seeing the introduction of the w/Motto Seated quarter design. The 1865 was produced to the extent of just 500 pieces, and survivability is low -- especially for high quality examples, as here -- due to the chaotic conditions that reigned during the Civil War era.
