Lot Description

1881 Shield Nickel. MS-66 (NGC). Intensely lustrous, boldly struck, and delicately toned with peripheral champagne iridescence. From a modest production run for the issue of 68,800 pieces, and a scarce date in circulation strike format. Although more circulation strikes were made than were Proofs, those made for commerce were spent and forgotten. On the other hand, Proofs were deliberately saved. Today in 2012 a Gem circulation strike such as this is a significant rarity. PCGS# 3811. NGC Census: 14; just 4 finer (all MS-67).
