Losbeschreibung
1837 Modified Matron Head Cent. N-13. Rarity-1. Plain Cords, Medium Letters. MS-63 BN (PCGS). Although a light die crack encircles much of the reverse periphery, this is still the early state of the 1837 Newcomb-13 dies as the denticles are full and bold around both sides. (The late state, Noyes B, was struck from heavily lapped dies with most of the denticulation polished away.) Glossy medium brown patina to most areas, flickers of original red are still evident around a few of the devices on the reverse. The surfaces are quite smooth overall with no abrasions of note, leaving it to a small area of variegated color at star 4 on the obverse to preclude an even higher Mint State grade. Appealing in all regards. Provenance: From the John McBride Collection. Earlier from our sale of the William P. Fowler Collection, Part II, January 2012 Americana Sale, lot 8119. PCGS# 1735.
