1866-S $20 No Motto MS (PCGS#8945)

Summer 2026 Global Showcase Auction U.S. Coins

Description du lot: Seldom are we fortunate enough to present multiple examples of this normally elusive No Motto Liberty Head double eagle issue in the sale sale. That offered here is a warmly colored honey-wheat example enhanced by wisps of vivid champagne-pink iridescence. Traces of luster remain, and both sides retain bold strike detail to all devices with the exception of a few around the peripheries, which are softly struck. Light hairlines and some glossiness are noted for accuracy; these attributes are quite common for the issue, but we see no marks that are individually distracting during in-hand viewing. The net result is an uncommonly and impressively smooth-looking coin for the issue that will surely appeal to astute double eagle enthusiasts.<p>
