Description du lot
1846-C Liberty Half Eagle. Winter Variety 1 (8-E), the only known dies. EF-40 (PCGS). With the Charlotte Mint closed throughout 1845 due to a fire, the 1846-C (12,995 pieces produced) seems to have suffered an unusually high rate of attrition due to the absence of an 1845-C half eagle delivery. Indeed, this is the second rarest of 24 C-mint half eagle issues, and EF-40 represents the finest quality usually obtainable under normal market conditions. Suitably bold in the presence of overall light wear, both sides are also free of singularly distracting abrasions that might have inhibited the coin's appeal. A touch of glossiness to the surface texture is noted, however, although it is bold khaki-orange color that dominates the outward appearance.
