Description du lot
1862 Seated Liberty Dime. Proof-63 (NGC).
A richly toned and aesthetically appealing specimen with robust luster in the brilliant central devices, and with rich rose, gold, and electric-blue evenly distributed on both sides. Pleasing.
Proof mintage: 550 pieces. It seems that not all were distributed, and some were melted in the next year. Beginning in 1862 it became very difficult for collectors to order gold and silver proof coins from the Mint, as current paper money in the form of Legal Tender notes was not acceptable at par, and payment had to be made in coins, which were difficult to find, and then only at a premium, as the public hoarded them.
