Lot Description

Warmly toned surfaces exhibit a few blushes of rich steely-russet to otherwise dominant pewter gray patina. Softness of strike affects the right peripheries on both sides, where stars 8 through 13 and the word AMERICA are somewhat faint, but elsewhere we note suitably bold detail at the assigned grade level. This is a popular low mintage date in the Capped Bust half dollar series that is always in demand, making the issue much scarcer in the marketplace than the rarity ratings of the O-101 and 101a attributions suggest. Only 47,150 examples were struck during an era where mintages of more than one million half dollars per year were commonplace. Die State 101.1.
