1853-DERIB Octagonal $1. BG-526. Rarity-6+. Liberty Head. AU-58 (PCGS). Iridescent salmon pink toning enlivens otherwise deep orange surfaces on both sides of this boldly defined semi-prooflike example. A couple of examples of this type were recovered from the shipwreck of the S.S. Winfield Scott. That find confirmed the issue date of these pieces as matching that included in the design, and also confirmed that they saw actual circulation during the Gold Rush era.
